If you've lived in Louisiana for more than 15 minutes you have probably figured out our laws are kind of quirky. Some of the most obtuse legislation are the laws regarding medical marijuana. The use of marijuana for medical needs is totally legal in the state of Louisiana. The rules regarding prescription practices and delivery of medical marijuana have never been written. Therefore medical marijuana is against the law to obtain.

Last year lawmakers considered the idea of closing that loophole in the 24-year-old statute that would make it possible for those who are prescribed marijuana by their doctor to actually get it. That measure was defeated after a strong push by state associations of sheriffs and district attorneys. This session, Baton Rouge Representative Dalton Honore, will try again to close the loophole in the distribution law.

"Some 80% of the polls indicate that the general public is in favor of it."

Honore's comments, reported by the Louisiana Radio Network, indicate public sentiment is on the side of making marijuana available for certain medical conditions. However, that loophole could become a Pandora's Box of other issues if the legislation is not written very specifically. Honore says his bill is buttoned up tight to insure that the marijuana will not become available for recreational use.

"It's not for any doctor, just specialty doctors.  It was restricted to only those doctors who could write a prescription for medical marijuana."

Honore hopes bring up the discussion and debate on the topic of medical marijuana when state lawmakers convene in April in their next scheduled session.
