In 2010, then state Senator Nick Gautreaux sponsored a piece of legislation that allows the state of Louisiana to strip casino winnings from noncustodial parents who are late on their child support statements.

The state Department of Children and Family Services announced this week the state has now collected $1.2 million from more than 900 hundred parents who claimed winnings at Louisiana's casinos.

The largest payment they were able to collect came from a person's $23,000 winnings at the Amelia Belle near Morgan City last year.

The department says collecting the winnings help to make a dent in the more than $1.3 billion that is owed to Louisiana's children and parents.
