I've heard of people faking an illness to get out of work but this is on another level.

This week, a Louisiana postal worker pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of "use of delay or destruction of mail by postal employee."

50-year-old Mark Wayne Thompson is a former U.S. Postal Service employee who had a rural route in the small town of Elmer in Rapides Parish. According to CBS News,

U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook said in a news release Friday that 50-year-old Mark Wayne Thompson took mail from his rural postal route in Louisiana to his home in Pitkin, where from Dec. 1, 2016 to May 1, 2017, he burned at least 20 tubs of mail.

The story doesn't give many other details, but I can only wonder how many people were on his route and at what point during that five month stint did they realize it was weird that they weren't receiving any mail?

Maybe he wasn't the only person delivering on that route, but anyone with a mailman knows that the same person delivers their mail on a daily basis.

In addition to a $250,000 fine, Thompson is looking at up to five years in prison with three years of supervised release.

He is scheduled for sentencing on April 6, 2018.
