Technically the race to replace retiring United States Senator David Vitter won't officially get underway until qualifying is complete. Candidates who are interested in earning the Senate seat with your vote will begin the qualification process on July 20th.

Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat suggested in his comments to the Louisiana Radio Network that Democrat Foster Campbell, who currently serves on the state Public Service Commission, has the support of Governor John Bel Edwards.

The possibility of two Republicans making the run off are probably not going to happen because with Edwards’ help, I can’t imagine Foster Campbell not getting the lion’s share of African American votes.

Pinsonat believes that Campbell will most certainly out poll the other Democratic candidate in the race, Caroline Fayard.

On the Republican side of the race the field is more crowded with more familiar names. The candidate who appears to be the front runner is State Treasurer John Kennedy. Pinsonat suggested that in the battle for name recognition state wide Kennedy has a sizable advantage over Congressman Charles Boustany, Rob Maness, and John Fleming.

He’s got a big lead on them. So they’ve got to spend money. They can’t wait until October before they spend money. Kennedy’s too far ahead for them to sit around.

The fact that many of the Republican candidates are well funded means you will soon start hearing and seeing advertisements touting their qualifications and no doubt attempting to discredit other candidates. Pinsonat seems to believe that the race for Louisiana Senate will be a costly one.

We have a lot of good candidates, and they do have enough money to have a good campaign among the five or six of them.

Voters will go to the polls to select a new United States Senator on November the 8th.
