LUS: Contractor Injured, Power Temporarily Turned Off In Parts Of Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) -- Power to a portion of Lafayette was temporarily turned off following an accident involving a contractor, according to Lafayette Utilities System.

LUS said a contractor was working near the Congress and Guilbeau intersection when he was injured. Power needed to be shut off so that emergency personnel could get to him safely, the utility company said.

"A large vessel was being moved by an independent contractor, and the vessel was tall enough that it hit a cable," LUS Director Terry Huval said. "This caused the power lines to come together to create the power outage in this area."

Lafayette Police reportedly told KATC TV-3 the vessel was part of the oil field equipment being escorted down Ambassador Caffery earlier Thursday afternoon.

The worker was apparently shocked when the line hit the convoy, police told the television station. He was treated for his injuries and was able to return to work.
