A Queensland, Australia man James Milne was turned away from a JB Hi-Fi store yesterday because he has Down Syndrome. It was initially a case of mistaken identity, but after the store manager was clearly shown he was wrong, it got even worse.

James was with his Family when the JB Hi-Fi store manager stopped them from entering the establishment. Jame's father was shown a picture of a white male who also had Down Syndrome who apparently was not allowed in the store due to a previous incident. James has a much more olive complexion, and was clearly not the man in the photo. The store manager replied with ‘well they look the same’.

After James, his dad and sister got home, they told James' mom what happened. The mom, obviously upset, called the store demanding the manager apologize to her son. He reportedly responded by saying "he would never, ever, ever get an apology" from him and that he had "the right to stop anyone he pleased from entering the store".

JB Hi-Fi and the manager of our Mount Ommaney store believe that we could have managed this in a better way in the interests of James and his family.

JB Hi-Fi is committed to learning from this and improving our customer experience across all of our stores. To support this we are reviewing our customer policies to make sure that they reflect best practice.
