It's not unusual to hear another artist singing a Chris Stapleton song; after all, the singer-songwriter penned hits for numerous other country artists before beginning his own career as a solo artist. However, it is a bit uncommon to hear other artists singing a song that Stapleton released on his own -- but Maren Morris and the Brothers Osborne prove up for the task. The three performed Stapleton's "Fire Away" at the 2016 AIMP Nashville Awards on Monday night (April 18).

Morris and TJ and John Osborne are country music newcomers whose careers may benefit from Stapleton's recent rise to fame; their sounds, too, are more traditional than much modern country music, but both Morris and the Osborne brothers have seen decent success so far with their singles. "Fire Away," with its sparse arrangements, heartfelt lyrics and soulful sound, isn't a huge stretch out of their repertoires; taking on the task of filling Stapleton's shoes, though, is a big one.

They passed with flying colors. Morris, who took the lead on the song's first verse, earned applause from nearly her first words -- applause that only grew louder as TJ Osborne sang the second verse and the three harmonized beautifully on the chorus. The 2016 AIMP Nashville Awards, hosted by the Association of Independent Music Publishers, honored seven winners in categories representing all aspects of independent music publishing. "Fire Away" was nominated for Song of the Year; the award went to Little Big Town's "Girl Crush." Brandy Clark, Kelsea Ballerini, Tyler Farr, Old Dominion and Sam Hunt also performed as well, each singing another artist's song.
