Massive Explosion Rocks Chemical Plant Outside Of Baton Rouge [UPDATE]

An early morning explosion at a chemical plant east of Baton Rouge has reportedly left some workers injured.

Louisiana State Police say that the explosion touched off a fire at The Williams Companies Inc plant in the Ascension Parish town of Geismar. State Police do not know how many workers may have been injured in the explosion, but they do report seeing several ambulances leaving the area with those injured. In an update, reports out now indicate that up to 30 workers are being treated for injuries. Also, KPLC-TV says that six burn victims have been airlifted to various medical facilities in the region. If there is any good news coming out of this fire/explosion, State Police say that there are no causalities to report at this time.

The fire broke out Thursday morning at the plant, which is near the intersection of Louisiana Highways 30 and 3115. The Olefin team is responsible for the ethane transportation business consisting of approximately 200 miles of pipelines, as well as a refinery-grade propylene splitter.
