Massive wreck at Talladega! Wait that's not really news. There is a massive wreck at Talladega Superspeedway every time they race there. This particular massive wreck happened in the NASCAR Truck Series yesterday.

Why do they have such big wrecks at places like Talladega and Daytona? It has to do with a little device known as a restrictor plate. The purpose of this plate is to reduce the horsepower the engine can produce. Lower horsepower means lower speeds and hopefully that means when there is a crash the vehicles will stay inside the catch fence.

While safety is a key issue in any kind of motor racing, competition is the reason we watch. The restrictor plate makes the good vehicles run at about the same speed as the not so good vehicles. The good drivers are racing really close to the not so good drivers. When you have vehicles traveling nearly 200 mph any mistake becomes a big mistake.

Fortunately all of the drivers involved in the incident were checked out at medical facilities and found to be okay.
