Drivers along Johnston Street yesterday afternoon had more than just the high volume of traffic to deal with. A late afternoon thunderstorm brought heavy rain, high winds and damage to the area just in time for the 5pm rush hour ride home.

Among the damage reported in the area yesterday was a tree on the roof of a home in the West Bayou Parkway area, a home struck by lightning on Gloria Switch road, multiple trees in the roadway and limbs and trees across power lines near the Horse Farm.

What can we expect for this afternoon? Dave Baker's official forecast is only calling for a 20% chance of afternoon thunderstorms. However with this much heat and the high humidity the thunderstorms that form could get heavy. The good news is any showers or thunderstorms should dissipate by early evening and most fireworks displays should go off without a hitch.
