Most Historic Small Towns in Louisiana
We live in a very, very historic state. Now, that being said, our friends at Only in Your State have come up with a list of 10 of the most historic small towns here in the Bayou State. Each has their own history and charm, and if you favorite is not on the list, please feel free to add it in to the comments section. Several of these towns are in Acadiana, so we are proud citizens, of course! The list, in no particular order,is below.
Opelousas - Spice Capital of Louisiana
Zwolle - home of the annual Tamale Festival
St Martinville - one of the oldest settlements in the state, known as Attakapas Post until the 1803 Louisiana Purchase
Natchitoches - oldest permanent settlement within the Louisiana Purchase,
Arcadia - death location of Bonnie and Clyde
St Francisville - home to 6 restored southern plantations
New Iberia - occupied by Union soldiers in 1862 and 1863
Abita Springs - originally a Choctaw Indian outpost
Ruston - established during restoration after the Civil War
Breaux Bridge - Crawfish Capital of the World
