Naming Of New High School Sparks Fierce Debate In Youngsville [VIDEO]
Youngsville City Councilman Jamey Abshire was not surprised the town hall meeting turned to the name of the future high school to be built in the city. He points to a significant investment that Youngsville has already made as a reason that the school should be named Youngsville High School.
Monday night at a special town hall meeting was opened to the public in Youngsville.
Rezoning, potential future tax proposals and all other school-related topics dealing with the city's new high school were discussed by city officials, school board members and the public.
The floor was also opened to anyone with comments, questions or concerns.
A big topic at the meeting was naming the new school.
A committee was formed to help pitch names for the school, and some local students even got involved.
"Comeaux High School students have really submitted quite a few recommendations to the Superintendent," said councilman Jeremy Hidalgo. "So, he's going to get together with his cabinet and narrow that down, find some commonality in all of the names that have been thrown out so he can make a recommendation to the full board."
One long-time resident of Youngsville stepped up to speak about the new school. The man said he felt strongly about the name "Youngsville High School" and that it is important for the city to have a high school in its name.
Suggested names for the campus will start being narrowed down by the superintendent as early as April.
The plan is to have the first phase of the project, which includes ninth and tenth graders, completed by 2017.
