Last night at the Lafayette Parish School Board meeting one of the most hotly contested name for a new school came to a conclusion as the new high school in Youngsville will be called Southside High.

The name that a lot of folks were petitioning for, Youngsville High, got voted down 6 to 3 while the Southside High name won 8 to 1.

As you may recall, the name was supposed to be chosen in December, but disagreements stalled the selection process.

Nearly 20 names were presented to the board - some selected by a committee, others by students who live in the neighborhoods that would make up the new school's zones, and two from Superintendent Don Aguillard.

Among the suggestions were names like Caneview High, Cypress High, Youngsville High, Southside High and South Lafayette High.

Youngsville mayor Ken Ritter was lobbying hard for Youngsville High and even had a petition with more than 1,200 signatures.

Broussard mayor Charles Langlinais, however, argued that the name "Youngsville High" would exclude students who attend the school but live in Broussard, Lafayette, Milton and the unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish.

Personally, I have two things to say about the situation: 1) I'm glad it's over and we can move onto more important issues -- like actually educating the kids! 2) The mascot has to the be the Roundabouts. Nuff said.
