New Orleans Bowl Memories: 2012

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun football team will take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the 2016 R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, scheduled for Saturday night at 8 pm at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La.

The appearance will mark the 5th in 6 years in the New Orleans Bowl for coach Mark Hudspeth’s squad.

All week, in anticipation of the match-up on Saturday night, we’ll be re-living previous New Orleans Bowl’s that Louisiana played in, from 2011-2014.

On Monday, we went back in time and re-lived Louisiana's incredible victory in the 2011 New Orleans Bowl.

Today, we remember the 2012 New Orleans Bowl, a 43-34 victory by the Cajuns over the East Carolina Pirates.

The Superdome was filled with 48,828 fans, with a vast majority from the Louisiana area wearing a sea of red. The figure shattered the 2011 attendance record for the R+L Carriers Bowl, and the fans were treated to an exciting matchup between two evenly matched teams.

The Cajuns got off to an explosive start, jumping out to a 28-7 lead in the second quarter.

Following a pair of touchdown passes from ECU quarterback Shane Carden, the Cajuns scored in the final seconds of the half, thanks to a 47 yard field goal from Louisiana kicker Brett Baer, giving them a 31-21 halftime advantage.

The Cajuns were paced in the first half by running back Alonzo Harris, who scored on two rushing touchdowns, including one from 68 yards.

After East Carolina tied the game, 31-31, Terrance Broadway hit Javone Lawson with a 14-yard touchdown pass near the end of the third quarter, to give UL a 37-31 advantage heading into the final period.

ECU got to within 37-34, but Baer later kicked two field goals, from 25 and 39 yards out, to seal the win for Louisiana, giving them their second-consecutive New Orleans Bowl victory.

Broadway was crowned the game MVP, totaling 424 yards of total offense, to go along with one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown.
