New Orleans Saints Franchise Tag Jimmy Graham, Graham Responds On Twitter
Most New Orleanians will yell “Throw me something mister” this weekend. Saints tight end Jimmy Graham may be yelling, but it will be out of frustration for being thrown the franchise tag instead of Mardi Gras beads.
In news that surprises absolutely no one, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the New Orleans Saints will franchise tag Jimmy Graham by Monday, which marks the franchise tag deadline.
UPDATE: The Saints officially franchise tagged Jimmy Graham on Friday.
While many of us will be stuffing our face with king cake on Fat Tuesday, Graham will be stuffing the league’s mailbox with a filed grievance, arguing he should be tagged as a wide receiver, not a tight end. However, he’s trying to keep light hearted on twitter.
If Graham were to win his expected grievance, the Saints would almost assuredly have to make more cuts (click here to read more about how Graham’s franchise tag quandry affects the Saints salary cap)
As I wrote about on Wednesday, Saints GM Mickey Loomis has reportedly made an offer to Graham that would make him the highest paid tight end in league history. However, Graham’s agent Jimmy Sexton isn’t budging, hoping to make his client as wealthy as some of the top wide receivers in today’s NFL.
With no progress being made in negotiations, news of Graham being franchise tagged is no surprise. The contract standoff will become much more interesting once the grievance is ruled on. Agents of players around the league will be monitoring the story closely, as no player has ever filed a grievance to argue which position they should be franchise tagged under.
