A Rapides Parish man is dead following what authorities are describing as a terrible tragedy. 37 year old Michael Haynes of Alexandria was hunting with friends when one of his companions mistook him for a deer and fatally shot him.

Unfortunately this kind of tragedy is repeated almost every hunting season. In this case the tragedy appears to be a case of mistaken identity and a tragic accident.

Lt. Tommy Carnline with the Rapides Parish Sheriff's office told the Louisiana Radio Network,

"It appears that another hunter that was hunting with Mr.Haynes mistakenly took him for a deer, and fired one shot,"
According to reports Mr. Haynes, a 37 year old resident of Alexandria,  was pronounced dead at the scene.
This story should serve as a reminder to all of you who hunt or enjoy time in the woods during hunting season. Hunting safety truly is no accident. Despite the need for camouflage wearing orange could save your life. Lt. Carnline explains,
"Orange is not a normal color in the woods, and it's really easy to see, that's why it is law in some areas that they have to wear hunter orange."
We encourage all of our listeners who hunt to take time to review gun safety, safety in the woods, and all local and state hunting regulations before you set out to bag your trophy.
