You thought the political season was just getting nasty. Today is the day it officially begins in Louisiana and across the country as our would be statesmen and women officially register in the races they hope to win.

The three day qualifying process for the November 4th elections begins today and while there are some great local races we're going to be watching, the biggest prize in the state appears to be the United States Senate seat.

By the time November 4th rolls around most of us will have become so sick of Mary Landrieu, Bill Cassidy, Rob Maness and every other politician that we will go out and vote just to make the commercials stop.  The problem with the United States Senate race in Louisiana is that it will most likely go into overtime. That means more mud, more accusations, more "he said she said" and more disillusioned voters.

The amount of money that is expected to be spent on this one race in the state is enough to make a Powerball winner jealous. Political analyst Clancy Dubos says the fact that the race is so very close and the prize so very big means the pocketbooks will be opened wide for spending.

"There will be 10 to 15 million dollars spent by the time it's all over, and probably 10 million or more just spent by the Republicans and their allies against Mary Landrieu. And she will spend probably 6 to 10 million dollars herself."

Dubos' comments were reported by the Louisiana Radio Network.
When you throw in the Rob Maness wild card that could lead to even more spending to capture your vote because most political pundits see this race going into overtime or a runoff. Clancy Dubos explains how the Maness campaign could affect the eventual outcome of the election.
"He takes probably 95% of his votes, or more, from Cassidy,so his candidacy could help Landrieu run first but the odds still favor a runoff in December."
Elsewhere other candidates will spend the next three days signing papers, filling out forms, mugging for TV cameras and doing their best to get your attention and your vote. Your job in the process is this. Get to know the issues, the candidates, their ideals and philosophy, and get registered to vote.
