Opelousas Man Who Died While Attacking Woman Identified

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office says they have now been able to identify a man who died while attacking a woman in her home on Story Lane last week.

Captain Megan Vizena says detectives have identified the suspect as 52-year-old Phillip Manuel of Opelousas.

Last week, deputies were called to the woman's home after she says she was awakened to Manuel on top of her, attacking her with a cane knife.

The woman says while she was trying to escape, Manuel rolled over and became unconscious.  The woman then fled to a neighbor's home to call for police.

Deputies found Manuel laying face down on the floor, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vizena says the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries.

An autopsy was done, but results of that autopsy are pending at this time.
