HOUMA, La. (AP) — A project to channel treated sewage through wetlands to help rebuild marshes in southern Terrebonne Parish is a few weeks from being completed.

The Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1YNNlgR ) that the project will reroute millions of gallons of wastewater into wetlands north of Lake Boudreaux instead of discharging it into the Houma Navigation Canal, which leads eventually to the Gulf of Mexico.

Clay Breaux, an engineer on the project, said the treated water will benefit an area destroyed by erosion.

Once complete, treated sewage will be pumped about 2,000 feet south from a wastewater facility and discharged at several points into the wetlands. Some 4.5 million gallons of wastewater could be pumped into the marshes on a given day.
