Louisiana residents can now get driver's licenses and identification cards that meet standards of the federal REAL ID security laws, this after years of refusal by the state to follow the requirements.

The Office of Motor Vehicles started issuing the REAL ID-compliant licenses and ID cards on Monday.

The move comes after Gov. John Bel Edwards and Louisiana lawmakers agreed earlier this year to scrap a 2008 state law prohibiting them.

But Louisianans still have a choice. They can choose whether they want a license or card that complies with the federal law or one that does not.

Congress passed the REAL ID Act to create national identification standards after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Identification meeting these federal standards will be needed to board domestic flights by 2020.

The major concerns over these new IDs have been related to privacy, specifically data collection and sharing.
