If a Baton Rouge lawmaker has his way, you and I will get to decide if Louisiana will be one of the next states in the country legalize marijuana for recreational use. Smoking pot for fun is already legal in Colorado, Alaska, Oregon, and Washington DC.

Representative Dalton Honore suggests in comments made to the Louisiana Radio Network that the time is right to give Louisiana voters a chance to voice their opinion at the ballot box.

"We either vote for it, to give the people option to vote for it or against it. Up or down,This is not a vote for marijuana, it's the option to let the people vote for it."

Honore's proposal would simply get the issue before the voters. Then after further debate on the specifics of how the substance would be controlled and distributed, it would go back before the people for a final and binding vote.

Honore is the same lawmaker who authored legislation in the last legislative session regarding the use of medical marijuana in the state. That legislation failed to pass. Currently Louisiana law does allow for the use of medical  marijuana, however, there are no guidelines for how that substance should be prescribed or distributed. Basically the legislation that is on the books is a law with no beginning and no end,  it's just there for show.

Look for recreational pot and medical marijuana to be thoroughly discussed in the upcoming legislative session that is set to begin in Baton Rouge April 13th.
