Restructuring Coming To Bayou Tortue Road ?

The city of Broussard says they have approved $240,000 for the reconstruction of Bayou Tortue Road from North Girouard Road to the parish line.

Broussard saying they are prepared to share the $740,000 cost with Lafayette Consolidated Government if they give their approval.

Broussard Mayor Charlie Langlinais says,

"This is a pressing road infrastructure issue we need to immediately address. The flooding, mud, silt and deterioration of the road are making it far too dangerous not to fix immediately. With the development taking place along this stretch of road and the number of people traveling Bayou Tortue to get from South Lafayette to St. Martinville, this is not something we can wait on any longer. We've already seen fatalities and terrible accidents occur. It's dangerous and it must be repaired."

Councilman Johnny Foco added,

"We have been been trying to patch this road for years. It is time to fix it correctly. We have committed the funding for the project and hope we can work with the City of Lafayette to get this done as quickly as possible."

Reached for comment about the story, Lafayette City Parish President Joey Durel had this to say to NewsTalk 96.5 KPEL,

"We are happy that the city of Broussard will fund the Broussard City portion of this road. As Lafayette Parish population grows, and the annexations of cities meander, this type of cooperation between city and parish governments is a must, and obviously benefits the people of the unincorporated areas of our parish as well as the cities that have annexed in the area. It is important that we continue to work together for the common good of all of the people."
