Robichaux Leads Cajuns Past Southern Mississippi, 6-2
Austin Robichaux allowed just four hits through seven innings, and Jace Conrad's sacrifice fly broke a 2-2 tie as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns defeated Southern Mississippi 6-2 in the first game of their three game series at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg.
Robichaux (1-1) walked four and struck out four in his seven innings of work. Matt Hicks allowed one hit through the final two innings for the Cajuns.
Louisiana (5-1) opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI double by Conrad and a ground ball by Tyler Girouard to take an early 2-0 lead. But USM starter Connor Fisk was stingy after that, allowing only two hits through the next five innings. Fisk recorded eleven strikeouts and allowed just four hits through six innings.
Southern Miss (2-3) got on the board on a Michael Sterling RBI single with two out in the third inning and tied the game in the sixth on doubles by Matt Durst and Dylan Burdeaux.
The Cajuns got what proved to be the game winner in the seventh on a double by Nick Thurman, a bunt single by Blake Trahan and Conrad's sacrifice fly off losing pitcher Nick Johnson. Louisiana would get three insurance runs in the eighth inning on a run scoring single by Evan Powell, and a double by Thurman.
Louisiana was led by Thurman's two doubles, while Seth Harrison also had two hits to pace the Cajuns' eleven hit attack.
