Saints Sign Safety Jim Leonhard

The New Orleans Saints agreed to terms with veteran safety/punt returner Jim Leonhard on Monday.

The 30-year-old Leonhard, who played his college football at Wisconsin, played the first three years of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, from 2005-2007, before moving on to play for the Baltimore Ravens, in 2008, and then three seasons for the New York Jets, from 2009-2011.

Last season, Leonhard was with the Denver Broncos, where had played in all 16 games, mostly on special teams, making 18 tackles, with two interceptions.

Leonhard's best season was with the Jets, in 2009, when he made 76 tackles for head coach Rex Ryan, the brother of new Saints' defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

Leonhard, who also can be used as a punt returner, has accumulated 344 total tackles, along with eight interceptions, in his eight years of NFL service time.

Leonhard joins cornerback Keenan Lewis, along with linebacker Victor Butler, and defensive end Kenyon Coleman, as  defensive free agents that have signed with the Saints during the offseason.
