Are you not a good rock-paper-scissors player? Consistently getting whooped upon by your six-year-old nephew?

Well now, have we got some great news for you!

Scientists at Zhejiang University in China have revealed a major breakthrough on the psychology behind this age-old game.

Here are the findings of their results:

  1. When a person's turn is successful, they are most likely to stick with their winning throw for their next turn. So if they beat you with rock, then they're likely to throw it again the next turn.
  2. If the person isn't successful, they'll most likely switch to whatever beat them. So if they throw rock and lose to your paper, their next turn they will switch to paper.

Researchers say that switch is a "conditional response". It's something we do instinctively, even though we think we're just picking randomly.

Excuse me while I find some little kid to school...
