Scott Man Officially Charged in Crash That Killed UL Student

24-year-old Joseph Dakota Rickey of Scott was taken into custody just days after the fiery crash that killed a UL student back in April. But, this week he was formally charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of drugs.

UL Doctoral candidate Brad Wedlock died after the crash which happened on West Congress Street near its intersection with Guilbeau Road. The 28-year-old Wedlock was in the turn lane waiting to turn into his apartment when his vehicle was struck. Witnesses say Richey was traveling at a high rate of the speed in the westbound turning lane. Wedlock was pulled from his vehicle, but died before making it to the hospital.

Richey is being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on an $89,050 bond.

The list of charges include vehicular homicide, OWI, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless operation, speeding and safety belt violation.

Since his death, Brad Wedlock has been honored by UL Lafayette with a posthumous degree and an endowment scholarship set up in his honor. Friends remember Brad's kindness and willingness to explore the word to learn about things around them. They unanimously speak to his love for kids and teaching them. He was planning to work in the classroom after graduation. An event called "Plaid for Brad" is planned for this weekend in Lafayette.
