Loretta "Lela" Girouard, the woman who inspired countless people at the recent Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, passed away over the weekend. She was only 41.

A Scott resident, Loretta first began her battle with breast cancer two years ago. It later moved into her lymph nodes, bones, spine, lungs and brain.

She made local and national headlines a couple of weeks ago when she courageously got up out of her wheelchair to walk the last few feet of the Race for the Cure here in Lafayette.

Loretta leaves behind her husband of 20 years, Jason, and two wonderful daughters, 17-year-old Janie and 12-year-old Maddie.

One of Loretta's greatest wishes was for her beloved daughters to continue their education at Fatima and STM schools until they graduate. And this is where you can help out.

The Girouard Girls Education Fund has been set up by family and friends for this purpose. Donations are being accepted at the Home Bank branch located on Ambassador Caffery and Verot School Roads. You can also mail your donations to 102 Hampton Road, Lafayette, LA 70503.

Although many of us here at 97.3 The Dawg never had the pleasure of really knowing Loretta, she has left an indelible impression on us all and her legacy will live on through her many family and friends who undoubtedly loved her beyond words.

Godspeed Lela.
