California advocacy group Seafood Watch is urging restaurants to avoid purchasing shrimp caught off the coast of Louisiana. Why are they doing this? Does it have anything to do with the BP oil spill? Nope... it's got everything to do with sea turtles.

Seafood Watch says it's blacklisted Louisiana shrimp because of a 1987 law that prohibits state agents from enforcing federal requirements that shrimpers use Turtle Excluder Devices in their nets.

Seafood Watch says this has nothing to do with Louisiana shrimpers using unsavory practices, but has everything to do with Louisiana's disregard of a law designed to help wildlife recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast.

Louisiana is the only state along the Gulf Coast whose shrimp is on the "avoid" list.
