It’s not just humans who need to buckle up.

The Center for Pet Safety has joined forces with Subaru to begin testing seat belts for dogs in the hopes of finding the most ideal (read: safest) one for man’s best friends.

Eleven different models were tested over the summer, with crash-test dummy dogs resembling a 25-pound terrier mix, a 45-pound border collie and a 75-pound golden retriever being placed in seats during the experiment.

The Center for Pet Safety says it hopes to find which restraint works best with the goal of getting some sort of certification and being part of a national standard.

Unfortunately, the testing didn’t go too well. Only one model reportedly held a dog in its seat.

Enabling dogs to ride safely in vehicles would be a welcome benefit – research says 90% of pet owners travel with their animals.
