Severe Weather Threat Across All Of Louisiana Today

An approaching cold front and low pressure system will kick off a significant weather event across much of the state today. Some of the showers and thunderstorms could reach severe limits before the system exits the state later tonight.

Behind the frontal system residents can expect a definite drop in temperatures bolstered by a strong northerly wind that will make Friday and the weekend very cold across the state.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma is forecasting the most significant threat of severe weather to be in southeastern section of the state. There is an enhanced threat of strong storms in Louisiana communities such as Lafayette, Alexandria, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans.

A slight risk of severe weather is forecast for extreme southwestern Louisiana including the communities of Lake Charles, Deridder and Fort Polk.  There is a marginal risk of severe weather for the residents in northern Louisiana. People living in Shreveport, Ruston, and Monroe can expect thunderstorms and rain but it does not appear as if that part of the state will be under the gun for significant outbreaks of severe weather.

State Climatologist Barry Keim told the Louisiana Radio Network that following the frontal passage late Thursday into Friday much colder temperatures will become the weather issue.

Pretty much everywhere north of the I-10/I-12 corridor are very likely to see freezes on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, so be prepared for that.  Take care of your pets and plants.
