South Alabama Cruises Past Cajuns 30-8

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns (8-4) didn’t envision their regular season ending the way it did Saturday night, a decisive 30-8 defeat to the South Alabama Jaguars (6-6).

Without the service of their starting quarterback Terrance Broadway (broken arm), redshirt freshmen Brooks Haack got the start. Haack, and the entire Louisiana offense, couldn’t muster much of anything positive.

The Ragin’ Cajuns had 7 offensive possessions in the first half, which ended in the following: punt, turnover on downs, fumble, punt, punt, interception returned for TD, end of half. South Alabama punted on their first possession, scored on the next 5, then returned a Haack interception for a touchdown late in the first half.

Louisiana entered halftime trailing the Jaguars 30-8. The first five offensive possessions for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the second half were no better. 5 three and outs, 5 punts, 15 plays, -22 yards.

Jalen Nixon entered the game at quarterback to lead Louisiana on it’s only scoring drive of the night. He hooked up with Ricky Johnson on a 47 yard TD with less than 5 minutes to go in regulation. Nixon ran in the two-point conversion, giving the Cajuns the only points of the second half.

Nixon finished 4-9 for 94 yards and 1 TD. Haack was 5-14 for 49 yards and an interception.

Already without the services of Broadway, Louisiana lost freshmen running back Elijah McGuire in the first half to a shoulder injury. McGuire, who currently ranks second in the country in yards per carry at 9 yards a pop, only ran the rock 3 times for 13 yards before leaving the game. His status for the Cajuns bowl game is currently up in the air.

With the loss, Louisiana ends the season at 8-4, with a 5-2 record in Sun Belt Conference. Arkansas State, who lost to the Cajuns earlier in the year, also finished 5-2. The Sun Belt Conference does not have a tie-breaker to determine a champion, meaning both schools will share the SBC championship.

The Cajuns will now switch their attention to the R & L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on December 21rst for a battle with the Tulane Green Wave (7-5) out of Conference USA. Kickoff is set for 8:00.
