Shreveport Police Chief Willie Shaw said they would not rest until the person responsible for gunning down one of their own was in custody. Chief Shaw and his department can now rest a little easier and properly mourn the loss of Shreveport police officer Thomas LaValley. The man officials believe is responsible for the killing of LaValley was taken into custody late Thursday afternoon.

The suspect, Grover Cannon was arrested at a residence around 3pm yesterday. The search for Cannon was an intense one. It involved not only Shreveport police but many other law enforcement agencies in north Louisiana.

Authorities allege that Cannon shot LaValley when the officer responded to a suspicious person call at a residence. LaValley was in full uniform including the department issued body armor. He was taken by ambulance to a Shreveport hospital when other officers arrived on the scene but he succumbed to his injuries.

27-year-old Grover Cannon was already wanted by police on a 2nd degree murder charge. The death of LaValley means he will now be facing 1st degree murder charges plus all the additional charges that come with crimes against peace officers. Authorities say the Cannon's arrest was aided by multiple tips from people within the community.

This marks the second police officer killed in the line of duty this week. Earlier in the week an officer with the Memphis Tennessee police department was gunned down during a routine traffic stop. Officer La Valley had been with the Shreveport police department since 2011.
