The naming of a new high school for Lafayette Parish has become controversial in the last few days, and Youngsville Mayor Ken Ritter spoke to Rob and Bernie on Acadiana Morning News to explain why he feels the naming process has been unfair to the Youngsville community and how it lacks transparency.

The first phase of the school will be open to students in August of 2017.

District Judge decides Cooper's termination was valid on one of four charges brought against him by the Lafayette Parish School Board.

The Pupil Progression Committee has issued changes that the School Board will consider at its meeting on Aug. 5.

The Lafayette Parish School Board is facing a $16 million budget shortfall.

It is expected the eliminated positions will be absorbed by resignations and retirements.

Cox Louisiana and Hunt Communications have been awarded a combined $600,000 a year contracts, displacing LUS Fiber as the Lafayette Parish School System's Internet provider.

All three will be interviewed on April 22 by the school board.

The board appointed Burnell LeJeune, a longtime school system administrator and supervisor, as the interim superintendent on Nov. 10.

Apparently voters are tired of the dysfunction of the current Lafayette Parish School Board.

The system has had to replace 60 drivers over the past two years. Most of that attrition was due to retirement.

The forums are organized by the League of Women Voters.

Law requires the budget to be submitted to the state by Sept. 30.

School systems are required to turn in their budgets to the Louisiana Department of Education on Sept. 15.

The funds come from excess tax collections and changes in salaries and benefits payouts.

The almighty dollar might once again be more revered than the safety of bus loads of our children. Is this really the best solution to our current school bus over crowding issue?

The board will soon vote on formal charges against its superintendent.

It will vote next on whether to accept all or some of those charges, after which Cooper would be subject to a hearing before the board and possible reprimanding, including termination.

A public hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11.

The qualifying period ends Friday, Aug. 22, at 4:30 p.m.
