Taylor Swift has a longstanding penchant for writing about her love life, and in a new interview, the young superstar says her romantic chaos played a very big role in her upcoming fourth album, ‘Red.’

“I went through a few roller coasters,” Swift admits to Rolling Stone, adding that she let herself slip into old shadows. “Trying to chronicle each step of the way was challenging, because you go to some really dark places with the lyrics. Then in the next track, you’re talking about how amazing it is to meet somebody new.”

Swift recently released ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,’ the album’s first single. The pop-flavored track sold a staggering 623,000 digital downloads in its first week, making it the fastest-selling song in iTunes history.

Fans and media have engaged in rampant speculation as to which of Swift’s former boyfriends the song may be about. Teen heartthrob Joe Jonas recently told a radio station that he was not the object of the song, but that he likes it. “I think the song is great,” he said. “Taylor does pop music really well and I’m happy for her.”

Swift has previously stated that ‘Red’ is an album of many sad songs, but right now, the singer-songwriter seems to be in a better place, spending much of this summer in Hyannis Port, Mass. with her new boyfriend, Conor Kennedy, of the famous family. When asked if she’d consider buying a house nearby their compound, Swift gushed, saying, “That would be so amazing.”

As for what she’s learned about love, Swift, who will turn 23 years old in December, says she still has no real answers. “I know general things about love,” she explains. “How to treat people well, what you deserve and when to walk away. Other than that, love is a complete mystery — and that’s why I like to write about it.”

‘Red’ is slated for release on Oct. 22.
