It was just about midnight and very near the Mississippi Alabama line. That's where forecasters say the center of circulation for Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall. The storm had been anticipated to strengthen to a minimal hurricane. But Gordon only managed to have top sustained winds of 70 mph. That wind speed is just under the threshold of 74 mph needed for hurricane status.

There was one fatality reported in connection with the storm. Officials in Pensacola say a child was killed when a tree fell on top of a mobile home. There have also been widespread reports of power outages in Lower Alabama, Coastal Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle.

Gordon is continuing to move swiftly to the northwest and by later this evening should be located near Vicksburg Mississippi. The storm is also expected to be downgraded to a tropical depression later today.

The biggest issues from Gordon appear to have been some storm surge, flooding from heavy rain, power outages, and downed treesThose have been the biggest effects in the immediate impact area.

Otherwise, for the rest of the country, Gordon will be a  prodigious rainmaker. Flood watches and warnings hundreds of miles in advance of Gordon's projected path are already in place. Some areas of the country could see between four and eight inches of rain with the storm.
