It is our job to cover the news, not to become the news. I had that idea burned in my brain many years ago while working as a news correspondent in Texas. Sometimes those that cover the news can't help but become the story, especially when the story is about our station vehicle being stolen, while we roll tape.

This happened in Sarasota, Florida where a reporter for the local ABC affiliate was shooting a story about a rental scam in the area. Obviously one resident did not take kindly to the unwanted attention. She asked the reporter to leave. The reporter was on a public street with every right to be there. That is when the resident took matters into her own hands and drove away in the reporters vehicle.
