UL Lafayette Retains High Status For Research Capacity

UL Lafayette has once again been recognized as one of the nation's top research institutions.

The Carnegie Foundation has listed the school among the top five percent of degree-granting colleges and universities in the U.S.

“Being recognized among the top 5 percent of research institutions in the country helps us attract superior professors, researchers and scholars, and grants,” said UL Lafayette President Dr. Joseph Savoie. “Our continued growth in research dollars positively impacts the state’s economy, as well as helps the Acadiana region’s diversification and growth.”

Of more than 4,200 schools surveyed, UL Lafayette is one of only 105 in the nation that received the foundation's "R2" designation for producing a high level of research activity. UL shares this designation with the University of New Orleans as the only two schools in the state receiving this designation. LSU and Tulane earned "R1" designations as being among the highest echelon of the nation's research schools.

The Carnegie Foundation honors are determined using the following criteria:

• research and development expenditures in science and engineering;
• research and development expenditures in non-science and engineering fields;
• science and engineering research staff; and
• doctoral conferrals in humanities fields, in social science fields, in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.
