UL Softball Falls To Michigan, 4-3
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun softball team lost a heart-breaker on Friday, falling to the Michigan Wolverines, 4-3, in eight innings, in the opening game of a best-of-three Super Regional series in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Michigan scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom half of the first inning, when Lyndsay Doyle lead-off with an infield singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Sappingfield, and then scored on a double by Sierra Romero, on a ball that was misplayed by the UL outfield.
One batter later, Caitline Blanchard singled to left, scoring Romero, to make it 2-0, Wolverines.
The game stayed that way until the top half of the seventh inning, when the Cajuns rallied with two out and nobody on. Nerissa Myers singled to left, before Brianna Cherry tied the game with a dramatic game-tying-two-run homer, to send the game into extra innings.
In the eighth, Louisiana took their first lead of the game, courtesy of a solo homer by Matte Haack, making the score 3-2, UL.
In the bottom half of the eight inning, Blanchard was hit by a pitch, bringing Ashley Lane to the plate.
Lane popped-up the second pitch of the at-bat, but the Cajuns misplayed it in foul territory, giving Lane another swing, and she took complete advantage, lining a pitch over the left-field fence, and giving Michigan game on of the series with a dramatic, walk-off,two-run homer.
Haylie Wagner (19-3), who pitched only two-thirds of an inning in relief of Sara Driesenga, recorded the win, while Jordan Wallace (31-8) suffered the loss.
With the win, Michigan improved to 49-10 on the year, while Louisiana fell to 46-14.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 11 am on Saturday.

If Michigan wins, they move on to the Women's College World Series.
If Louisiana wins, it would force an if necessary game tomorrow afternoon.
