The 21st-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team swept a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader from  the WKU Hilltoppers in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Saturday, winning the opening game, 8-4, before capturing the second game, 11-5.

The win moves Louisiana's win streak to 12 games, while putting an end to WKU's 8-game win streak.

In the opener, the Cajuns scored first, as outfielder Hayley Hayden blasted a two-run home run to right-field in the top of the first inning, giving them a quick 2-0 lead.

WKU scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning, on a Brooke Holloway solo home run, cutting the UL lead to 2-1.

After the two teams each scored two runs in their respective halves of the fourth inning, Louisiana catcher Lexie Elkins crushed a two-out, three- run homer to left, extending their lead to 8-3.

First baseman Shelbi Redfearn hit the third home run of the game for the Cajuns in the top of the fifth inning, a solo shot, to give them a 8-3 advantage.

The Lady Toppers managed a run in the bottom half of the seventh, but it wasn't enough, as UL went on to the four-run victory.

Hayden led the way for Louisiana at the plate, going 3-for-4, with a homer, three runs scored, and two runs batted in, while second baseman Natalie Fernandez, Elkins, and Redfearn collected two hits apiece, as the Cajuns out-hit WKU, 10-5.

Christina Hamilton (13-1) got the win for Louisiana, while Emily Rousseau (13-8) took the loss for WKU.

 

In the second game, the Lady Toppers scored a run in the bottom half of the first inning, before Redfearn smashed a two-run home run in the top of the third, giving the Cajuns a 2-1 lead.

Louisiana added six more run in the top of the fourth, with three coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Elkins, making it 8-1.

From there, the Cajuns went to the six-run win, the doubleheader sweep, and their 19th win in their last 20 games.

Outfielder Shellie Landry paced UL at the plate, going 3-for-5, with two RBI's, while Fernandez, Redfearn, and third baseman Samantha Walsh each collected two hits, as Louisiana out-hit WKU, 14-5.

Jordan Wallace (12-2) earned the victory for the Cajuns, while Hannah Miniard (11-4) was saddled with the loss for the Lady Toppers.

 

With the two wins, Louisiana improved to 27-6-1, overall, and 8-0 in Sun Belt Conference play, while WKU fell to 24-12-1, overall, and 6-2 in league play.

The two teams wrap-up their three-game, weekend, Sun Belt Conference series with a single game on Sunday beginning at noon.
