The tire that caused an SUV to crash into the school bus carrying the Lafayette High School baseball team was at least ten years old, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

The crash happened on a Saturday in February, the day after Valentine's Day, as the LHS baseball team was traveling to Berwick on US 90 to play a game. The SUV was traveling in the opposite direction, lost control after the tire, which NTSB officials say had not been changed since the car was bought, blew out causing the vehicle to cross the median and into the bus.

The head on crash killed four people, including three minors, all of whom were in the SUV and not wearing their seat belts. According to our news partners at KATC, 31 people on the bus were injured, including several sustained concussions and cracked vertebrae.

The NTSB is still examining the tire. It's expected to take months for the investigation into the crash to be complete.
