Louisiana State Police are reminding drivers to buckle up following a fatal head-on collision that claimed the lives of a Ville Platte couple Saturday night

Master Trooper Brooks David reported 87-year-old Fredrick Phillips and 84-year-old Bonnie Phillips were both killed in the head-on collision on Highway 167 north of La. 103 in St. Landry Parish.

Davis said the crash occurred around 8 p.m. Saturday when Fredrick Philips attempted to pass a vehicle while traveling northbound on Hwy. 167. At the same time, 26-year-old Elliot Leblanc, of Breaux Bridge, was traveling southbound. Leblanc was unable to avoid the collision and the vehicles struck head-on.

Fredrick Phillips was not wearing a seat belt, while passenger Bonnie Phillips was restrained at the time of the crash. Both sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner's Office.

LeBblanc suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.  Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
