The three seemingly unrelated individuals who were famous in their own unique ways-- Marie Antoinette, Queen of France; Mark Twain, renowned author; Nikola Tesla, brilliant electrical and mechanical engineer-- were all cat lovers.

Interestingly, Tesla's passion for electricity and the path his life took began when he was just three-years-old while he was watching his cat Macak.

When Mark Twain's cat Bambino went missing, he offered a $5 reward for its safe return. He thought they were the

cleanest, cunningest, and most intelligent things I know, outside of the girl you love, of course.

Twain said he couldn't resist a purring cat.

Sir Isaac Newton was also a cat person. He even invented the cat door! Our beloved 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, had four cats who lived in the White House with him. His wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, once quipped when asked if her husband had a hobby: "Cats."

June is National Adopt-A-Cat Month. Each of these fine folks, and several other well-respected people who adore our feline friends, would be most appreciative if you would consider adding one to your family. This month, you can adopt a cat at the Lafayette Animal Control Shelter for just $60. Every cat up for adoption is spayed or neutered, is up to date on shots, and is micro-chipped.

While the majority of pet owners have dogs, there are more cats kept as pets in the United States than their canine companions. They are easier to take care of, as they don't need to be let out. A litter box, a bowl of food and fresh water can get through the entire day. As a matter of fact, they prefer it. Cats spend the majority of their days sleeping, mostly because they can.
