The 69th annual Golden Globes were awarded Sunday night, with a kinder, gentler Ricky Gervais at the helm.

After last year’s snark-fest, many thought Gervais would bring the controversy again, but with the exception of an isolated jab here and there, the incendiary moments were few.

And while the award presentations themselves brought some surprises, others hardly required a crystal ball — like perennial winner Meryl Streep taking home a record-breaking eighth trophy.
