If you want a raise at work, you might want to think about spending more time at the gym.

According to a new study published in study in the Journal of Labor Research, people who exercise regularly earn nine percent more than people who don’t.

While this suggests that those who are motivated enough to workout are also go-getters at work — and that the exercise itself isn’t what’s getting them a bigger paycheck — there is more to it.

Vasilios Kosteas, of Cleveland State University, who conducted the study, was able to use a statistical technique to determine that, all else being equal, regular exercisers get paid more.

One reason for this may be that exercise improves brain function and energy levels, which could be beneficial in the work place. Another is that working out makes people look better, and better looking people also get paid more.
