Winky Dinky Dawg’s Ultra-Marathon Blog – Week 1
I think Dierks Bentley said it best….I know what I was feeling, but what was I thinking?
Hello everyone. I am Rob, but most everyone knows me as Winky Dinky Dawg. I’m the weekend morning guy here on the Dawg and I’ve signed up for my first ultra-marathon in February 2018. What is that you ask? I will be running a 50k which is 31.06 miles. That .06 is very important by the way. I have begun training this past week and have paid the entry fee and posted it on Facebook. We all know once it’s on Facebook, it’s real so there is no backing down now. Here’s a brief history lesson on how I got here.
I began running about 10 years ago. I was overweight and could barely run a mile without walking several times. I had done a few 5Ks but I signed up for my first half marathon and met Bruce Mikells during the training, for what it’s worth. Since 2009 I have completed several 5Ks and 10Ks, 13 half marathons (13.1 miles), a couple of 25Ks (15.5 miles) and 2 marathons (26.2 miles). As you can see, half marathons are my favorite distance. You can either just run and enjoy the race or push yourself without causing too much pain the next day. Those who have run a marathon are nodding their head right now knowing the pain of trying to navigate a curb or stairs the day after a marathon. Oh the pain!!!!
I continually try to push myself to be a better runner and in that quest, I have started my training for my first ultra-marathon. Why you ask? Good question. I turn 50 this October and I thought a 50k at 50. Makes sense, right? Some have asked, why not a 50-miler and I simply just look at them with that look we have all seen from our family and friends when a stupid question is posed. Listen I’m crazy but not stupid…yet.
I am a goal oriented person. I may not be the best at what I do but I will complete what I started, no matter how ugly I look along the way. With that in mind, I am now officially signed up for the Rocky Raccoon 50k in Huntsville, Texas on February 10, 2018 and I would like to take you along with me on my journey. I will share my stories both good, bad and ugly along the way in hopes of maybe inspiring you to accomplish your goals or just make you laugh. It doesn’t matter what your goal is as long as you don’t quit and finish what you started. If it’s running, getting a degree, losing weight, making yourself healthier or just to be a better person, never give up on yourself. No matter the goal you set for yourself, it doesn’t matter if you walk, run or just crawl, never stop moving and always relentlessly move forward. If you happen to see me out running, say hi and good job. If you see me passed out on the side of the road, call 911 but turn off my GPS watch first if you don’t mind.
