Travelers along Interstate 49 know that exiting at U.S. Highway 190 in Opelousas can be a bit of an adventure. The exit ramps and entrance ramps are close together and the curves required to make the exit require a dramatic reduction in speed to exit the roadway safely. When you consider that the  volume of traffic on these two roadways has increased significantly it is no wonder local and state officials are considering making changes to this interchange.

Opelousas Mayor Don Cravins, in a report from the Louisiana Radio Network, indicated that the issue with interchange was that it was never fully completed during initial construction. Discussions concerning changes with the interchange have been ongoing for at least the last ten years but no final and approved plan has ever been issued or put into place. Now the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is looking into a short term fix to improve safety and traffic flow in the area. There was no indication as to when that fix might be implemented.
