A man is facing negligent homicide charges after St. Landry Parish sheriff's deputies say an infant died while in his care.

According to investigators, Nicholas Ducote left his two-year-old and nine-month-old children in a bathtub while he went into another room to fold clothes and play video games. Investigators say Ducote checked on his children "a short amount of time" later after hearing a splash. That's when, investigators say, Ducote found the nine-month-old unresponsive in the water. Ducote called a relative and emergency services for help, but the child died. The two-year-old was not injured.

The coroner ruled that the nine-month-old died as a result of an accidental drowning. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says Ducote was criminally negligent while caring for the child, resulting in the charge.

"His simple carelessness resulted in the accidental death of an infant child," Guidroz said in a press release.

Ducote's bond is set at $25,000.
