As part of the local Smithsonian Water/Ways exhibit project, the Jeanerette Museum Board and Jeanerette Landmarks Society have partnered to present a cypress industry history talk to be held at 6 p.m. on April 3 at the Harry B. Hewes Home located at 1617 Main St., Jeanerette.

Ashley Franklin will lead a talk on the history of the local cypress industry. She currently works as a Special Projects Coordinator for the Office of State Museum at the Wedell-Williams Aviation and Cypress Sawmill Museum and E.D. White Historic Site. She obtained her Master’s degree in Anthropology from Louisiana State University after completing her thesis research at the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Natural History.

Her previous work experience includes Educator and Gallery Guide at Louisiana’s Art and Science Museum. Personal Assistant for Louisiana’s Southeast Regional Archaeologist, Project Developer for Louisiana’s Division of Archaeology, and Social Science professor at Baton Rouge Community College. She has always had a profound interest and passion for Louisiana culture and history.


This program is suitable for an adult audience and is being held free of charge, however, seating is limited and taken on a first come, first serve basis.
This program is a part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities made possible through funding from the Walton Family Foundation. This program is also sponsored by the Friends of the Jeanerette Museum.
