(KTDY) - A driver in Louisiana is lucky to be alive after a piece of debris flew into the windshield of the vehicle they were driving.

The St. Tammany Fire Protection District #1 shared a few photos on their social media page that show what appears to be a piece of iron in the windshield of the vehicle that was traveling along I-12 earlier this week.

According to their report, the driver did not sustain any injuries but was shaken up by the incident.

While I can't speak for everyone, most drivers will tell you their biggest fear is something coming through their windshield while driving, and this driver is lucky to be alive.

The fire district shared these photos to remind you always to secure what you may be towing or transporting because if whatever you're hauling gets loose, it can suddenly turn into a deadly projectile.

What to Do If a Projectile Hits My Vehicle

1. Stay Calm and Stay in Control

  • If you’re driving, keep both hands on the wheel and maintain control.

  • Avoid sudden swerves unless necessary to avoid further danger.

2. Pull Over to a Safe Location

  • Move to the shoulder, a parking lot, or a safe side street.

  • Put your hazard lights on.

3. Check for Immediate Danger

  • Look for signs of fire, smoke, or leaking fluids.

  • If the projectile penetrated the cabin, assess for injuries—yours and the passengers'.

4. Call 911 Immediately

  • If you suspect it was intentional (gunfire, a thrown rock from an overpass, etc.) or dangerous debris, involve law enforcement right away.

  • Give them your location, a description of the projectile if known, and any details about where it came from.

5. Do Not Touch the Projectile

  • If it’s still lodged in your car, avoid touching it—it could be evidence.

  • Photograph the damage and surroundings if it is safe to do so.

6. Document Everything

  • Take photos and notes (time, location, what you saw/heard).

  • Get witness contact info if possible.

7. Contact Your Insurance

  • Report the incident promptly with your documentation.

  • If police are involved, get a copy of the incident report.

8. Have the Car Professionally Checked

  • Even if it still drives, a projectile can cause hidden damage to safety systems, wiring, or structural components.
