Newly released body-camera footage is giving the public a firsthand look at one of the most unusual police chases Louisiana has seen in recent memory.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office has released video showing the aftermath of an alligator attack involving a man who was attempting to evade authorities during a DWI investigation on Sunday, June 7.

Troopers Say Driver Fled During DWI Investigation

According to Louisiana State Police, troopers responded to reports of a Toyota Supra being driven recklessly on Interstate 10 near Bonnabel Boulevard in Jefferson Parish.

Authorities say the vehicle had struck a concrete barrier and suffered a tire blowout before continuing into St. Charles Parish, where troopers conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 310.

While speaking with the driver, identified as 40-year-old Victor Rivas of Montz, troopers reportedly observed signs of impairment. During the investigation, Rivas allegedly fled on foot and jumped from the elevated portion of Interstate 310 into the swamp below.

Bodycam Video Captures Aftermath Of Alligator Attack

The newly released body-camera footage shows deputies searching the swampy area after Rivas fled a second time when officers attempted to take him into custody along Airline Highway.

Authorities say Rivas ran deeper into the swamp, where he was attacked by an alligator and suffered injuries to both arms.

In the video, deputies can be heard communicating with the suspect and assessing his condition after locating him in the swamp. The footage shows the challenging conditions officers faced while attempting to safely take him into custody and get him medical attention.

The sheriff's office also released drone footage that helped deputies track Rivas through the marshy terrain.

Suspect Continued Running Despite Injuries

According to both Louisiana State Police and the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, the alligator attack did not immediately end the chase.

Authorities say Rivas continued attempting to flee despite being injured before deputies, guided by the agency's drone team, eventually located and apprehended him as he exited the swamp.

He was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Charges Filed After Arrest

After his release from the hospital, Rivas was booked into the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on charges including:

  • Operating a vehicle while impaired, first offense
  • Resisting an officer

Louisiana State Police also obtained additional warrants charging him with hit-and-run and careless operation related to the earlier crash.

In a lighthearted note included in its news release, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office said the alligator "has since returned to its regular patrol of the swamp."

The body-camera footage and drone video have quickly made their rounds, with many calling it one of the most uniquely Louisiana law enforcement stories of the year.

As always, all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
